How Can You Overcome Driving Fear?

Do you get panic attacks whilst driving?

Your driving fear is very dangerous if it develops into a panic attack whilst driving. You can find yourself experiencing some or all of the following sensations:

Choking
Racing heart

Chest pain

Difficulty in swallowing
Numbness or tingling in extremities
Vision disturbances
Muscular shaking

Heartburn

Dizziness

Sweating

The best thing to do is to take a deep breath and focus on your driving so you can stop safely and give yourself time to calm down.

How can you overcome driving anxiety?

Once you've safely pulled to the side of the road concentrate on your breathing. If you learn to breathe properly it can help prevent the uncomfortable feelings mentioned in the list.  Most of these sensations occur as a result of restricted breathing.  When you panic you start to over breathe, or hyperventilate.  This causes the body to take in far too much carbon dioxide than you need.

You may not notice it but If you are anxious you can often end up breathing badly or even holding your breath.  Only a small change in the mix of oxygen to carbon dioxide can cause panic-like symptoms and additional anxiety.

Luckily you can train yourself to use proper breathing by following some simple techniques.  Before you attempt to drive it will help you if you practice the techniques so you will know how to use them when you need them.

Check your breathing

  1. Put one hand on your stomach, and the other on your breastbone.
  2. Find out what muscles you use to breathe using your hands.
  3. Pay attention to which hand is rising and which is falling whilst you breathe.
  4. If you move the hand on your chest the most, you aren’t breathing from your diaphragm.  If this is the case you need to teach your body to breathe from the lower lungs.
  5. If the hand on your belly moves the most, then you’re breathing well.

Adjust your breathing

  1. Put your hands on your rib-cage near the bottom and make sure your finger-tips are only just touching.
  2. Take a deep breath and notice how far your hands are pushed apart
  3. When you breathe out notice how your hands move together again

These techniques help you control your symptoms and help you cope with a difficult situation.  Whilst this is helpful it is important to get to the root of your driving fear and clear away the problems causing your anxiety.
